The Australian Garlic Industry Association launch of the Garlic Season in Victoria was a great success. The management and stall holders at the Sth Melbourne Market made us very welcome. In particular Georgie and Michael at Georgie's Harvest made sure we had everything we needed including delicious Skodalia and crunchy bread to feed to passing shoppers. (The skordalia recipe will be up on the Recipes section of the website soon). Four AGIA members, Leon and Cathy Trembath, Bruce Ahchow and Penny Woodward spent the day talking to dozens of shoppers, explaining about Australian garlic and how it is so much better than imported bulbs. Cathy did some wonderful plaiting demonstrations using their beautiful, glossy purple garlic and Bruce brought his laptop to show interested passers by what a garlic farm looks like. Penny brought some different cultivars of garlic and talked about the range of garlics available and the varying flavours you can get from different types. The chefs at the market had specialty food cooked using Australian grown garlic (again we hope to have some of these recipes on the website soon). All in all it was a great day and Leon, Penny and Bruce will put together some notes so that we have a template for similar events Victoria and other states in coming years.
