Congratulations to all award winners in this year’s AGIA Australian Garlic Awards.

This year we saw lovely garlics from an excellent range of Groups with different characteristics that represent an exciting array of garlics available in Australia for home cooks and chefs alike.
The hotter, dryer season meant some slightly smaller bulbs but less disease than we see in wetter years.
Flavour has the highest rating of the four judging categories: Condition and uniformity external, condition internal, aroma and flavour.
Flavours ranged from intense, hot, peppery and very garlicky, right through to mild, sweet and even fruity with latent heat. A few entries had slight mite damage but this didn’t affect their flavour. Overall an excellent year for Australian Garlic.

Although Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum) is not a true garlic, the AGIA have included it in the competition because it is so widely grown and eaten.
