Call for submissions – Garlic pest/disease diagnosis and treatment

Webinar – Garlic Disease Diagnosis, Treatments and Corrective Actions. 

Letetia Ware is one of Australia’s most knowledgeable experts on garlic growing and garlic pest and disease identification. Her guide to ‘Garlic Pests and Diseases’ is a valuable reference for many Garlic growers.

With over 20 years’ experience in both broadacre and seed garlic production and more than 12 years of commercial consulting, we are very excited to have Letetia present a webinar focusing on garlic disease diagnosis, treatments and corrective actions.

What makes this session so exciting is that we will be selecting three of our members as anonymous case studies for the webinar, making it relevant to the specific issues our growers are currently experiencing.

The format will be a Webinar for AGIA members:
The first half of the session will review the three case studies, using the basics of disease differentials, symptoms and dissection and the second half will review the diagnosis, treatments and future preventative and corrective actions.

This will help us develop strong diagnostic skills rather than waiting on pathology labs, which can take 3-8 weeks, and will include symptom assessment, how to perform basic dissections to inspect key plant tissue parts, understand what is normal versus abnormal and whether it is biotic or abiotic in nature and then match it to the cause.

Selection for a case study
Members will provide photo examples of their growing issue; from these examples, we will identify the most common cause, and three individuals will be selected for a case study after an evaluation and short consultation with Letetia.

If the examples show more than one major cause, we may have a second or third session to showcase those. This will largely depend on demand.

To be considered for a case study, a grower must have:

High-quality, in-focus photographs of the diseased garlic plant and/or bulb showing symptoms (minimum 1Mb and preferably several photographs with varying close-up and mid-distance aspects and angles)

It is also preferable if you have:

In-field photographs at varying stages of production that might illustrate the timing and pattern of impact

Photographs of “healthy” plants/bulbs so that other members can see the comparative difference (again minimum 1Mb in size and from various angles)

Percentage of crop affected (>5% is considered yield-impacting)

Please also specify:

Location and state

Climate zone (tropics in the north, subtropics across much of the continent’s centre, temperate zones in the south.)

Garlic Group (Cultivar)

Area under production per season

Cracking method

Curing method, equipment and timing

Soil type (sandy, clay, silty, loamy)

Irrigation type

Whether you have a soil test and/or tissue tests
